Lighting

One of the most important, and arguably the most difficult to achieve, aspects of a basement is proper lighting. Many basements have only a few small windows, leaving only artificial light to pick up the slack. While powerful LED lights can completely light-up your entire basement with ease, and do so efficiently, natural lighting is the way to go

Artificial light

These days, LEDS are exceptional at providing ample light while also being incredibly efficient. If there’s no way to bring in any more natural light, or you can’t afford a remodel window installation, LEDs are your best bet.

Hidden LED lighting is a great way to improve the lighting in your basement, especially if you have no way of increasing natural light.

Natural light

Letting natural light pour into your basement is the single best way to make it feel larger and more comfortable. Combined with a well-placed mirror or two, your basement will look beautifully bright. As previously mentioned though, it’s not always the most accessible option.

A single egress window is enough to let a mountain of natural light through, though installing one is not always an option.

When it comes to saving space in a small basement, there are quite a few different clever engineering hacks you can try out.

Under the stairs

Under-the-stairs space has become increasingly more popular over the years, and for good reason. Depending on your staircase’s structure, it’s an almost entirely empty area—perfect for setting up shelving, drawers, or even a play room that doubles as a toy storage area.

Smaller Furniture

Though somewhat obvious, replacing some of your larger furniture can make a huge difference in how big your basement looks. A giant couch will certainly make the space look smaller compared to a set of reclining chairs. Cut down on the furniture sizes and the room will look larger, especially when combined with other decorations like mirrors or a giant rug.

Make the Space Your Own

While all of these options are great ways to maximize the space in your basement, a sense of personal flair is vital. Personal touch is the key to all great aesthetics, so be sure to keep that in mind when planning a basement change!
