Here's a common question that we get quite often: “what's the difference between basement remodeling and basement renovations?” These two terms are not interchangeable, though people tend to confuse the two sometimes. There is, as it turns out, a big difference!
Renovations tend to involve a basement that is currently in a state of disrepair. It is basically taking an old basement with lots of damage and making it looks new again. The term “basement renovations” typically applies to cosmetic adjustments (sink faucets, counters, cabinet knobs, and paint are all good examples) that does not dramatically alter the basement's original design.
In other words, a basement renovation typically updates the look of the basement without altering the basement's overall structure.
Remodeling a basement means that you are focusing more on the layout of the basement rather than cosmetic changes. Adding a different ceiling to your basement or additional rooms are considered remodels, for example. Electrical work, plumbing, and other “behind-the-scenes” upgrades are all considered basement remodels.
An example of a basement remodel is combining a kitchen-like wet bar with the family room, or installing an island in your kitchen-like wet bar. In both of these examples, you are altering the basement's floor plans.
Understanding the difference between these two terms will help the remodeling process go smoothly as you closely communicate with contractors. If you ever list your home for sale, knowing whether you have a remodeled basement or a renovated one will attract the right kind of buyer.
